Even if your lender has started the process of legal action for repossession, there are still steps that you can take to help you keep your home.

If you haven’t done so already, speak to someone who knows about housing law. That doesn’t mean that you have to pay a solicitor and get yourself into any further debt, there’s free legal aid available to anyone – you just need to know where to look.

Anyone can call Shelter’s free national helpline on 0808 800 444. Or if you’re on certain benefits or have a low income, you can call the Civil Legal Advice helpline on 0345 345 4345.

If you’re not ready to give them a call just yet, both agencies have a wealth of information on their website if you’d like to consider all your options beforehand.
